Grid Saliency for Context Explanations of Semantic Segmentation

Neural Information Processing Systems

Recently, there has been agrowing interest in developing saliencymethods that providevisualexplanations ofnetworkpredictions. Still, theusability ofexisting methods is limited to image classification models. To overcome this limitation, we extend the existing approaches to generategrid saliencies, which provide spatially coherent visualexplanations for(pixel-level)denseprediction networks.

Semi-supervised Semantic Segmentation with Prototype-based Consistency Regularization

Neural Information Processing Systems

Semi-supervised semantic segmentation requires the model to effectively propagate the label information from limited annotated images to unlabeled ones. A challenge for such a per-pixel prediction task is the large intra-class variation, i.e., regions belonging to the same class may exhibit a very different appearance even in the same

A feature refinement module for light-weight semantic segmentation network

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Low computational complexity and high segmentation accuracy are both essential to the real-world semantic segmentation tasks. However, to speed up the model inference, most existing approaches tend to design light-weight networks with a very limited number of parameters, leading to a considerable degradation in accuracy due to the decrease of the representation ability of the networks. To solve the problem, this paper proposes a novel semantic segmentation method to improve the capacity of obtaining semantic information for the light-weight network. Specifically, a feature refinement module (FRM) is proposed to extract semantics from multi-stage feature maps generated by the backbone and capture non-local contextual information by utilizing a transformer block. On Cityscapes and Bdd100K datasets, the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a promising trade-off between accuracy and computational cost, especially for Cityscapes test set where 80.4% mIoU is achieved and only 214.82 GFLOPs are required.

Improving Prediction Accuracy of Semantic Segmentation Methods Using Convolutional Autoencoder Based Pre-processing Layers

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

In this paper, we propose a method to improve prediction accuracy of semantic segmentation methods as follows: (1) construct a neural network that has pre-processing layers based on a convolutional autoencoder ahead of a semantic segmentation network, and (2) train the entire network initialized by the weights of the pre-trained autoencoder. We applied this method to the fully convolutional network (FCN) and experimentally compared its prediction accuracy on the cityscapes dataset. The Mean IoU of the proposed target model with the He normal initialization is 18.7% higher than that of FCN with the He normal initialization. In addition, those of the modified models of the target model are significantly higher than that of FCN with the He normal initialization. The accuracy and loss curves during the training showed that these are resulting from the improvement of the generalization ability. All of these results provide strong evidence that the proposed method is significantly effective in improving the prediction accuracy of FCN. The proposed method has the following features: it is comparatively simple, whereas the effect on improving the generalization ability and prediction accuracy of FCN is significant; the increase in the number of parameters by using it is very small, and that in the computation time is substantially large. In principle, the proposed method can be applied to other semantic segmentation methods. For semantic segmentation, at present, there is no effective way to improve the prediction accuracy of existing methods. None have published a method which is the same as or similar to our method and none have used such a method in practice. Therefore, we believe that our method is useful in practice and worthy of being widely known and used.

Evidential Semantic Mapping in Off-road Environments with Uncertainty-aware Bayesian Kernel Inference

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Robotic mapping with Bayesian Kernel Inference (BKI) has shown promise in creating semantic maps by effectively leveraging local spatial information. However, existing semantic mapping methods face challenges in constructing reliable maps in unstructured outdoor scenarios due to unreliable semantic predictions. To address this issue, we propose an evidential semantic mapping, which can enhance reliability in perceptually challenging off-road environments. We integrate Evidential Deep Learning into the semantic segmentation network to obtain the uncertainty estimate of semantic prediction. Subsequently, this semantic uncertainty is incorporated into an uncertainty-aware BKI, tailored to prioritize more confident semantic predictions when accumulating semantic information. By adaptively handling semantic uncertainties, the proposed framework constructs robust representations of the surroundings even in previously unseen environments. Comprehensive experiments across various off-road datasets demonstrate that our framework enhances accuracy and robustness, consistently outperforming existing methods in scenes with high perceptual uncertainties.

Volume-DROID: A Real-Time Implementation of Volumetric Mapping with DROID-SLAM

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

This paper presents Volume-DROID, a novel approach for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) that integrates Volumetric Mapping and Differentiable Recurrent Optimization-Inspired Design (DROID). Volume-DROID takes camera images (monocular or stereo) or frames from a video as input and combines DROID-SLAM, point cloud registration, an off-the-shelf semantic segmentation network, and Convolutional Bayesian Kernel Inference (ConvBKI) to generate a 3D semantic map of the environment and provide accurate localization for the robot. The key innovation of our method is the real-time fusion of DROID-SLAM and Convolutional Bayesian Kernel Inference (ConvBKI), achieved through the introduction of point cloud generation from RGB-Depth frames and optimized camera poses. This integration, engineered to enable efficient and timely processing, minimizes lag and ensures effective performance of the system. Our approach facilitates functional real-time online semantic mapping with just camera images or stereo video input. Our paper offers an open-source Python implementation of the algorithm, available at https://github.com/peterstratton/Volume-DROID.

survAIval: Survival Analysis with the Eyes of AI

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

In this study, we propose a novel approach to enrich the training data for automated driving by using a self-designed driving simulator and two human drivers to generate safety-critical corner cases in a short period of time, as already presented in~\cite{kowol22simulator}. Our results show that incorporating these corner cases during training improves the recognition of corner cases during testing, even though, they were recorded due to visual impairment. Using the corner case triggering pipeline developed in the previous work, we investigate the effectiveness of using expert models to overcome the domain gap due to different weather conditions and times of day, compared to a universal model from a development perspective. Our study reveals that expert models can provide significant benefits in terms of performance and efficiency, and can reduce the time and effort required for model training. Our results contribute to the progress of automated driving, providing a pathway for safer and more reliable autonomous vehicles on the road in the future.

An Iterative Classification and Semantic Segmentation Network for Old Landslide Detection Using High-Resolution Remote Sensing Images

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Huge challenges exist for old landslide detection because their morphology features have been partially or strongly transformed over a long time and have little difference from their surrounding. Besides, small-sample problem also restrict in-depth learning. In this paper, an iterative classification and semantic segmentation network (ICSSN) is developed, which can greatly enhance both object-level and pixel-level classification performance by iteratively upgrading the feature extractor shared by two network. An object-level contrastive learning (OCL) strategy is employed in the object classification sub-network featuring a siamese network to realize the global features extraction, and a sub-object-level contrastive learning (SOCL) paradigm is designed in the semantic segmentation sub-network to efficiently extract salient features from boundaries of landslides. Moreover, an iterative training strategy is elaborated to fuse features in semantic space such that both object-level and pixel-level classification performance are improved. The proposed ICSSN is evaluated on the real landslide data set, and the experimental results show that ICSSN can greatly improve the classification and segmentation accuracy of old landslide detection. For the semantic segmentation task, compared to the baseline, the F1 score increases from 0.5054 to 0.5448, the mIoU improves from 0.6405 to 0.6610, the landslide IoU improved from 0.3381 to 0.3743, and the object-level detection accuracy of old landslides is enhanced from 0.55 to 0.9. For the object classification task, the F1 score increases from 0.8846 to 0.9230, and the accuracy score is up from 0.8375 to 0.8875.

How to Reduce Change Detection to Semantic Segmentation

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Change detection (CD) aims to identify changes that occur in an image pair taken different times. Prior methods devise specific networks from scratch to predict change masks in pixel-level, and struggle with general segmentation problems. In this paper, we propose a new paradigm that reduces CD to semantic segmentation which means tailoring an existing and powerful semantic segmentation network to solve CD. This new paradigm conveniently enjoys the mainstream semantic segmentation techniques to deal with general segmentation problems in CD. Hence we can concentrate on studying how to detect changes. We propose a novel and importance insight that different change types exist in CD and they should be learned separately. Based on it, we devise a module named MTF to extract the change information and fuse temporal features. MTF enjoys high interpretability and reveals the essential characteristic of CD. And most segmentation networks can be adapted to solve the CD problems with our MTF module. Finally, we propose C-3PO, a network to detect changes at pixel-level. C-3PO achieves state-of-the-art performance without bells and whistles. It is simple but effective and can be considered as a new baseline in this field. Our code is at https://github.com/DoctorKey/C-3PO.

Model Stitching and Visualization How GAN Generators can Invert Networks in Real-Time

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The 1x1 convolution is trained to map from a hidden layer of the classification or semantic Critical applications, such as in the medical field, segmentation network into a hidden layer of the GAN require the rapid provision of additional information generator. Utilizing this mapping, we can quickly visualize to interpret decisions made by deep learning activations of the classification or semantic segmentation methods. In this work, we propose a fast and network, by transferring them through the convolutional accurate method to visualize activations of classification connection into the GAN generator, i.e., we use the GAN and semantic segmentation networks by generator as a decoder to invert the classification or semantic stitching them with a GAN generator utilizing segmentation network.
